57th E.S. Meyers Memorial Lecture – Attended by Mark Andrews (ProLENDING)

The evening started with a fitting tribute for Dr Derek Meyers, who sadly passed away earlier this year, given by Prof Darrell Crawford and Dr Fauzia Muhammed, with many of the Meyers family in attendance.

Various guest speakers including presentations to UQMS Clinical teachers followed and then it was time to hear from respected Ophthalmologist and Wallaby legend, Dr Mark Loane, who spoke about his 23 years of delivering eye health services to indigenous and remote communities across Australia. We learned about the man and his passion for trekking, his love of the landscape, his medical career and of course the incredible work he and his team are performing in remote areas, especially in north Queensland.

We have been fortunate enough to have Dr Loane present the UQ Med Rugby jerseys in 2011 and also address the team at half-time during our Grand Final – which we went on to win – no doubt, helped by his inspiring words.

It was also great to see so many familiar faces of past and present Med Rugby and UQ Med Touch players in the audience, hearing first-hand from one of the best – of just how medicine and sport can mix so well and how important it is to enjoy yourself along the way.

His parting words were from the Canadian Ice Hockey Champion, Wayne Gretzky who famously said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Congratulations to Rhys, Ian and Zach (and Matthew) for convening this wonderful evening.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen many of these lectures over the past 10 years and Dr Loane’s kind delivery was exceptional.
